Why Stretch It?

We're designed to stretch - it maintains flexibility and agility - but it's something we often neglect.

Ever wondered why cats and dogs seem so agile? In part, it's because they're in tune with their natural inclination to stretch. They lengthen their limbs every time they chase a mouse or postie, or get up after hours lazing in the sun. We humans, on the other hand, often forget that we were designed to strech, too. It's only when we feel tight and sore after a busy day or a gruelling workout that it ccurs to us stretching might have been a good idea.

Why we need to stretch and what happens if we don't

If we don't lengthen out muscles on a regular basis, they will tighten over time and we won't be able to move our limbs as far as they should. Ultimately, losing our flexibility means that even the easiset of daily tasks can become impossible - think zipping up your boots or reaching up for a book on a shelf.

On the positive side, stretching can increase or preserve our flexibility and so increase our chance of living in leaps and bounds until a ripe old age. The benefits of stretching don't stop there. Stretching also relieves muscle tension and improves blood circulation, which increases our energy levels. And don't forget the simple feel-good factor of having a "hands above the head" stretch first things in the morning.

Bottom line is: If you dont want to end up hunched over, attached to a Zimmer frame, or dependant on someone else, the onus is on you to make stretching a part of your lifestyle

Safety First!

1. Stretch only until it feels mildly uncomfortable - if it's painful, it's wrong. Dont jerk into a stretch, that's a recipe for injury, Slowly does it!

2. Always breathe deeply into the stretch, that allows you to go further and get past the initial resistance.

3. Always keep your joints slightly bent when you stretch to avoid putting too much pressure on them

4. If you have any exisitng lower back or knee pain, or another form of injury, do not perform any of these stretches until a quilified health professional has given you the green light.
